It's been almost five years since Emily in Paris first exploded onto our screens, with plenty of hiccups and French faux pas along the way.

As Gen-Z's answer to Carrie Bradshaw—it's created by Sex and the City's Darren Star after all—the previous four series of the romantic comedy have followed the titular character Emily Cooper (played by Lily Collins) as she moves to Paris to further her career in marketing. Obviously, nothing is that straightforward, and she's met with a vibrant, if slightly hesitant, mix of Parisian characters, including the formidable Sylvie, played by Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu.

Despite the series facing some initial backlash regarding its negative portrayal of the French, Emily in Paris has gone on to become a much-loved, guilty pleasure watch. As we continue living through a reality that seems rather doomed, the sunny, Paris-based rom-com provides welcome light relief, with a Patricia Field-curated wardrobe to boot.

This week, Netflix released its first look at Emily in Paris season five, and things are about to change quite a bit. Here's everything we know so far...

Where is Emily in Paris season five set?

For the first time since she waltzed onto our screens, this series will see Emily swapping the arrondissements of Paris for the historic streets of Rome. But much like her life in the previous seasons, the marketer-come-influencer will no doubt be zipping around her adopted country, likely with a new love interest in tow. From the first-released set of images, we know that she visits Venice, and also looks to have ventured into the Italian countryside (on a horse, no less).

What is the plot of Emily in Paris season five?

According to Netflix, this season will centre around our main character as she moves to Rome to head up Agence Grateau's Italian office. Unsurprisingly, there are more challenges to be faced than just the language barrier, including heartbreak, work setbacks and friendship fall-outs.

Who will be part of the cast for Emily in Paris season five?

Most of the beloved cast will be returning alongside Lily Collins this season. The Agence Grateau team, including Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Samuel Arnold and Bruno Gouery, will continue their work antics. Ashley Park, Lucas Bravo and Lucien Laviscount will also remain part of Emily's circle, while Eugenio Franceschini looks to be returning as her Italian love interest. Other cast members confirmed for season five include William Abadie, Thalia Besson, Paul Forman and Arnaud Binard.

Camille Razat, who plays Camille in the series, announced earlier this year that she would not be returning for the next season of Emily in Paris. It makes sense for both the character, whose storyline wrapped up neatly in the previous season, and for Razat personally, who has other projects with Netflix and Disney+ underway, as well as having started her own production company.

When will Emily in Paris season five be released?

The Christmas film rewatches will have to wait this year, because Emily in Paris season five will be dropping on Netflix on 18 December. The series will have 10 episodes in total, although whether they'll be available to watch individually or all at once (this is more likely considering previous releases) is still to be confirmed.
