No, it’s not another movie.

He ruled the ‘90s as the ‘khiladi’ of all seasons, made us sit at the edge of our seats over countless action thrillers and left us rolling on the floor laughing in the 2000s, became one of Bollywood’s most bankable star in the 2010s, and is now well into his fourth decade in cinema. That’s Akshay Kumar for you—an actor who continues to perform with the same energy and enthusiasm like it was his very first day on the set. Having packed a punch across versatile roles and genres, one wonders what the actor will explore next. We have got you the answer. Kumar has launched his own clothing brand—Force IX. While we wait for him to turn his charm on the big screen, we surely are excited to see what magic he weaves in the clothing segment.

The actor, in an exclusive interview with Harper’s Bazaar India, tells us how he, very much like his films, is changing the game (this time in fashion), his favourite fashion decade, his love for athleisure, and more. Read on.

Harper’s Bazaar: Could you share something about your brand and its collection, and how you resonate with it?

Akshay Kumar: For seven years, I've wanted to start my own clothing brand. On two separate occasions, I even came close to launching my own collection, but here I am, launching my dream today! I guess it’s true when people say, ‘third time’s the charm’.

I personally love wearing athleisure outfits, because for me comfort tops everything. It’s a must-have style in my closet. I have seen this style being around for a while now, and I’m sure it is here to stay.

For me, Force IX is much more than just a clothing brand; it is an extension of who I am. Force IX is ‘engineered with emotion’.

HB: Force IX is here to break conventional norms of modern-day fashion. That’s something you’ve been doing for decades. How are you planning to change the game through the association?

AK: The fashion industry is more dynamic than ever today. Consumers across age groups are becoming more fashion-conscious and aware. Their discernment and flair for fashion inspired the brand to make the most interesting mood boards.

The designs found in Force IX’s collections draw inspiration from the aesthetics of the armed forces and translate them into new-age sensibilities in order to appeal to Gen Zers.

Creating styles that are not only unique but also effortless and versatile is the bedrock of the brand, and Force IX is here to break conventional norms of modern-day fashion.

One of the key USPs of Force IX is the attention to detail. Right from the logo and buttons, to the stitching, every aspect has been designed and curated with a purpose; to symbolise the core ideologies of the brand and create an element of interest for patrons.

HB: You have made style statements over the years; could you tell us your favourite looks over the decades?

AK: The ‘90s was all about bomber jackets. The oversize clothing trend is also a product of the ‘90s. People started experimenting with their styles in the 2000s. The Internet boom made access to international trends easier. The current trend is all about being relaxed, comfortable, and wearing comfort with style. It's bold, sporty, and versatile.

HB: As far as personal style is concerned, what’s remained unchanged in all these years?

AK: I’d say my penchant for athleisure wear. It’s my go-to style, and I can never have enough of those. Whether I am unwinding after a film shoot, going for a shoot in the morning, or shooting outdoors, you’ll often find me in my tracks or joggers and a super comfy t-shirt.

HB: Is there something that you stay away from when it comes to clothing and the world of fashion?

AK: I like to experiment with my style, and I try to keep up with trends as much as I can, but I stay away from large or bold prints. I avoid tight-fitted clothing; except for when it comes to suits—I need my suits to be well-fitted.

HB: What matters more to you, style or comfort?

AK: A style that is comfortable, because who says you can’t have both? And that is exactly what we had in mind when we conceptualised and created Force IX. It will give you fashion that is comfortable, yet stylish.

HB: You’ve been versatile in your roles; do you stick to what suits you best when it comes to fashion or adapt to the trends and times?

AK: I think I do experiment, in my own little ways—sometimes with a new color, sometimes a new style, but not so much with prints. And that is how, over time, you become aware about what sort of style looks good on you.

Fashion is an ever-changing game and one needs to keep up with it, without losing their personal style. Not everything suits everyone. I always believe that one must keep up-to-date with trends, but adapt only the ones that make you feel comfortable.

HB: You starred in six movies in 2022, and another six are coming up this year—12 films in two years! It’s commendable that you have the same amount of energy and enthusiasm like you did when you announced yourself in Bollywood. What’s the secret to radiating such charisma and confidence and being so consistent?

AK: It’s all my fans and their unconditional love. They’re the reason I wake up every morning and go in front of the camera with the same enthusiasm as I did, 30 years ago! When you have the love, adulation, and prayers of millions, there’s no stopping you. It’s like all the Monday motivations on social media put together.
