The resurgence of vanilla perfumes reminisces the 90s

The penchant for all things Y2K extends itself to vanilla notes!

Who can forget that era in the late ’90s and early 2000s when you couldn’t walk into a shopping mall without being consumed by a cloud of vanilla perfume? It was a signature scent for almost every other teen at the time. From candles, stores, hallways, and even beanie babies—everything smelled of vanilla. So it comes as no surprise that with our current yearning for all things 90s (like crop tops, low-waisted jeans, and headbands), we’ve managed to create the perfect environment for the resurgence of vanilla as a popular fragrance note. While the note never went out of style, it certainly seems to be experiencing a boom at the moment. One can understand the allure of vanilla, because it is one of the most sensual ingredients—in fact, it was so often used in “love potions” across medieval Europe, leading to a ban on its sale. It's multifaceted; soft, strong, comfortable, and enigmatic. It really represents the scent of being.

Contrary to popular belief, vanilla is not just a feminine scent. It has almost proven to be a universal addiction in all of its iterations, ranging from soft gourmand to bold amber. It’s one of those rare notes that sparks a positive response from everyone. One can't help but feel a cloud of nostalgia as a spritz of vanilla perfume wafts through the air. However, today’s take on vanilla is more elevated than the over-the-top, sweet versions that graced our olfactory in the 90s. Unlike vanilla scents from the past, which could be perceived as a bit low-brow, perfumers are now pushing out iterations of vanilla that are entirely new and more luxe than ever. The vanillas of today are very sophisticated and nuanced. It's been a pivot in a direction that we could definitely get used to—as lovers of polished, sensual fragrances that aren’t afraid to take a little risk.

Amongst the initial lot of modern vanilla fragrances to gain attention were soft and creamy blends. These largely paid homage to the delectable elements of vanilla that we're all familiar with—but the note was further enriched with warmer additions like cinnamon and sandalwood, giving an element of sensuality. Accompanying vanilla’s growing popularity, the interest in gourmand fragrances has been on the rise, too. The yearning for other edible notes like caramel, bourbon, and nuts (like Sol de Janeiro’s best-selling Brazilian Crush mists), can be attributed to this movement.

In addition to evoking a sense of reminiscence, vanilla is also resonating due to its wide appeal. In a world that’s growing increasingly polarised, there’s one thing most of us agree on: Vanilla smells good! One reason for its comeback is that it elicits very positive, comforting feelings. Another set of vanilla blends is not afraid to take risks, unlike its subtler predecessors. While these too make vanilla the main character, they can be better described as intoxicating rather than comforting—seeming to draw more inspiration from older, bolder vanilla fragrances, graced with amber notes. This speaks to the versatility of vanilla, proving that its wide range extends from cupcake to risque.

The growing interest in the note leaves consumers open to the idea of a less traditional vanilla. These new, intense takes could also result from an ongoing desire for more long-lasting scents. Indie fragrance houses, like by/ rosie jane, are also putting vanilla front and centre in their new launches, essentially hopping onto the bandwagon whilst adding a unique twist that captivates the senses. A strong sense of 90s nostalgia washes over us with these notes increasingly reappearing on the market. With its power to linger beyond just fleeting moments, you can count on a vanilla scent to last you through the day, night, and evidently through the ages.
