Makeup frothing is a beauty trend that does more harm than good. Here’s why.

It’s a waste of product and time!

Not sure if it’s a thing, but I absolutely love froth on almost everything—in the bathtub, in my beer and in my coffee. So much so, that when the Covid-19 pandemic led to working from home, the only thing I missed about going to the office was the coffee machine. Of course, I missed my amazing colleagues too (especially if they are reading this!). Now note this from a froth-fan, I do not like the concept of makeup frothing.

Of course, frothing makes everything look delicious. Have you seen those whipped soaps? They look like the icing you put on cupcakes!

For those who haven’t encountered digital creators trying out makeup frothing yet, let me tell you what it’s all about. It’s better than the trend that involved adding lube to your foundation, but it still doesn’t seem like the best thing to do to your face. Makeup frothing involves using a milk-frother—one you’d use to make your cappuccinos—to get your foundation to have a mousse-like consistency. You add two-three drops of liquid foundation to a couple of spoons of water and blend and blend.

While you can trust anything weird to go viral on the Internet, here’s why you should steer clear of the makeup frothing trend.

You are contaminating your foundation

It is not rocket science that humidity attracts bacteria. If you are adding water to your foundation, it is very much likely that you are contaminating your product and then happily applying bacteria-laden makeup on your skin. All those hours you spent doing skincare becomes futile. And God forbid you to fall asleep with this makeup on!

There are lightweight formulations available in the market

Sure, DIY sounds super exciting but a fun fact, there are lightweight foundations available in the market. There are water-based ones too, so you don’t have to add it to the foundation and try making a mousse-like concoction for nothing. That way you get only foundation, no bacteria.

You’re wasting product

Since you run the risk of contaminating your foundation when frothing it, there is no way you can store it and use it later. Whatever gets left out gets thrown out. Or you can add it to your face and pretend it is Halloween. Your call.

The only safe way to do this is rather tedious

Makeup frothing can cause your skin to break out due to contamination of the product. The only safe way to do this is to sterilise your milk frother before and after every use. And you cannot use it to make your coffee. And you have to distil/filter/boil the water you are adding to it. Are you willing to go through so much, just for...froth? If you had to pick the stupidest thing you’d done, between your ex and this makeup trend, it would be a tough choice!
