Cushion foundations are back—and they're your answer to glowy skin on the go
Dab, blend, repeat!

They came. They conquered. And then they briefly went on a hiatus. Ten years later, cushion foundations are making a comeback like no other. With lightweight formulas that offer buildable coverage, this K-beauty phenomenon has taken over the globe. Known to leave you with an effortless dewy-esque finish, cushion foundations are technically pressed liquid foundations that come in a compact form and with a product-soaked sponge. Portability, application, or finish, what is it that makes this particular base product such a worldwide hit as opposed to its liquid counterpart? Experts weigh in.
Why cushion?
According to celebrity makeup artist Aashna Shah, there are several reasons why cushion foundations have become a makeup staple today. “There’s an ease of application, their compact packaging makes it portable, and relieves you of the hassle of carrying around brushes,” she explains. “Secondly, it offers a soft, natural, dewy finish that looks like second skin and can be built up, as well, if you want a heavier finish.” It’s beginner-friendly too, as it’s easy to blend and apply.
Liquid foundation vs cushion foundation
“The difference lies in its packaging technology,” says Sandhya Shekar, celebrity makeup artist and co-founder, MOKAE Beauty. “In a cushion foundation, you have a layer of microfibre cushion placed in a compact, and the liquid foundation is poured over it. When you press on it, the foundation comes through it and goes on to the applicator.” On the other hand, liquid foundations are packaged in bottles or tubes and require brushes, makeup sponges, or your fingers for blending.
So, what gives cushion an edge over liquid? Shekar believes that it could be the application. “There is a more even application with a cushion foundation because the sponge covers a larger surface area and easily spreads on the skin, which makes overall application easier. Secondly, the consistency of the product is also more sheer, and therefore it spreads out evenly on your face.”
Who is it meant for?
While cushion foundations are a good fit for most skin types, Shah recommends that they’re best for those with normal to dry skin. Some formulations may suit oily and acne-prone skin, but they’re best avoided, as they may contain oils and creams that may cause the skin to break out. “Secondly, if the puff is used on active acne and reused on the skin without cleaning, it may cause further damage.”
Having said that, Shekar does believe that the formulation is apt for covering acne marks, as the high coverage sits seamlessly on acne. It is important to note that cushion foundations tend to cling to texture, making well-prepped skin an absolute essential.
How to make the best out of your cushion
To get the most out of your cushion foundation, start by picking the right tool for your desired finish. For lighter coverage and a minimal look, take the product from the sponge onto a brush. If you're after a dewier, more natural glow, use a damp beauty sponge to thin out the consistency. Remember, always dab, never swipe. It is the key to an even application. If you feel like the product is running low, try flipping the foundation-soaked sponge inside the compact. One pat is typically enough for your entire face, so avoid repeatedly dipping in for every section. Begin application from the nose, blending outward toward the cheeks and then the hairline. If the coverage feels too heavy, use a buffing brush to tone it down. And don’t forget to clean your applicator puff regularly to prevent bacteria buildup.
