This fall, blush takes centre stage in a way we haven’t seen before. Blush veiling is a makeup technique that is It-girl-approved. Think of it as the natural evolution of the watercolour blush and “jelly doughnut glow” that swept through Instagram earlier this year. Where those looks were playful and fresh, blush veiling feels more refined, more atmospheric, perfect for autumn’s moodier palettes.

What is Blush Veiling?

Blush veiling is applying blush or a combination of blushes that layers the face with a soft, translucent wash of colour, creating a dreamy veil effect. The word “veil” is key here. Instead of placing blush only on the apples of your cheeks or using it to sculpt, this trend drapes a sheer tint across the high points of the face, cheeks, temples, and sometimes even the bridge of the nose—like a delicate fabric.

The goal isn’t to look like you’re wearing blush, but to look as though you’re glowing from within, cloaked in a whisper of colour. It’s the perfect trend to tap into if you’re looking for a rather minimalistic natural flush. Blush veiling is all about diffusion. It’s when the pigment seems to melt into skin, blurring edges so seamlessly that there’s no obvious start or finish. It’s soft-focus makeup at its most ethereal.

How do you do it?

Choose your formula wisely: Creams, balms, and gels are your best friends. They melt into skin without sitting on top. If you prefer powder, pick one that’s finely milled and satin-finish rather than matte. But layering could also be your best bet for this trend. Try to mix lighter formulas as opposed to heavier ones for a seamless glow.

Build, don’t dump: Start with the lightest layer possible. Press the product into your skin with fingers or a dense brush, then diffuse outward. Remember not to apply too much pressure which could diffuse the layers unevenly. The key lies in application and buildability for the softest veil-like look.

Think beyond cheeks: Sweep a touch toward the temples, blend across the nose bridge, and even bring a hint onto the eyelids for a monochrome glow. This will help create an overall hue that ties the entire look together.

Diffuse the edges: Use a clean brush or sponge to feather the pigment outward—this is what transforms blush into a “veil.” This step is key to achieving an overall balance for your final look.

Lock it in softly: A spritz of setting spray or a whisper of translucent powder ensures longevity without dulling the glow.
