The hamamelis virginiana, or the American witch hazel has been used in skincare for centuries. From promoting skin health and warding off acne to getting rid of excess oil and soothing skin irritation, this powerhouse ingredient is making a major comeback and can be found in a lot of the products on our beauty shelves. We explored the benefits of witch hazel to determine whether it truly deserves the spot it holds. Scroll down to know what all this ingredient is capable of.

Warning: Witch hazel may not suit all skin types. Before using any product that includes it, do a patch test.

Relieves inflammation

Witch hazel has anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe the skin. If you suffer from skin conditions like skin irritation, razor burn or eczema, look out for products with this super ingredient.

Along with having anti-inflammatory properties, witch hazel also has antiseptic properties, and can be used to clean small wounds and irritants without disturbing the skin.

Tightens pores

As you age, the collagen in your skin starts to break down. As a result, your skin loses elasticity and starts looking saggy. This sagginess results in your pores looking larger your skin texture being ruined. Enter witch hazel. While the powerhouse can’t permanently make your pores smaller (nothing can), it temporarily causes your pores to contract, giving your skin a more evened-out look.

Treats acne

Finding a product that effectively treats acne and acne scars, and is also free from chemicals that can further irritate your skin, is a massive task. That is where witch hazel comes in. It acts as an astringent that dries our acne blemishes. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties fight bacteria in acne-prone skin without further damaging it.

However, do remember that while witch hazel is the answer to small breakouts, chronic acne problems need professional attention.

Removes excess oil

If you have oily skin, witch hazel is one ingredient that should be part of your routine. A build-up of excess oil can lead to clogged pores and pimples. Witch hazel cleans your pores deeply to get rid of that build up. It’s another reason why the ingredient is so powerful against acne as well.
